WHAT ARE BEARINGS?
Used to reduce friction and support loads, bearings are key to the smooth operation of your vehicle. Bearings can be found on many different parts of your car such as:
Properly pressing a bearing in place will help prevent damage to rolling elements. Be sure all components are free of dirt and corrosion and only apply force to the bearing race you are installing. Avoid transferring pressure through the rolling elements or tapping directly on the race of the bearing; doing either of these can damage the bearing. Place a sleeve between the bearing race you are installing and tap evenly in place.
When inspecting the bearings, be sure to examine the assembly before starting a repair. Don’t find one bad bearing and stop your inspection – other failed bearings or out of balance components can lead to premature bearing failure. Once you have looked at entire system, you can be confident that you’re doing a complete repair.
If you can’t remember the last time you checked the bearings on your trailer, it’s time to inspect them. Whether you have a travel trailer, boat trailer or utility trailer, checking the bearings is an important step that should be taken at the beginning of each season. Check the trailer wheels for looseness, noise and heat. Excessive amounts of wheel looseness, noise or heat is an indication that the bearings should be serviced or replaced.
When servicing tapered wheel bearings, adjusting the bearings is important. Once the hub bearings have been cleaned, inspected and/or replaced, lubricate with the appropriate grease and install a new seal. Reinstall the hub assembly on the axle, rotate the hub slowly while tightening the spindle nut to about 50-ft lbs. Remove the torque by loosening the spindle nut. Don’t rotate the hub – hand tighten the spindle nut until just snug. If a cotter pin is used, back the spindle nut out until the first castellation lines up with the cotter keyhole. Insert the cotter pin and bend over the legs to secure the nut. Always consult your manufacturer’s service information for application-specific instructions.
